Reflection about Leadership
As far as my role as a leader, this project has helped me realize that I want to be a more engaged, hands-on leader who truly reflects upon all practices occurring within my school. At my school, my administrators have not really begun to look at the data to examine why the achievement gap continues to grow. I hope to be more reflective and take the time to research additional strategies that can be used to close this gap.
When creating the mission and vision of the school, I think that all stakeholders must be involved. Rather than just having a group of teachers and an administrator creating the documents, I believe that as a leader, you must also include other stakeholders, such as a diverse group of parents. This would also have a positive impact on the relationship between the homes and school as parents feel that their opinion is valued.
As a principal, I hope to have an open-door policy with my students and their families. I want the parents to know that I am here to support them and to do the best for their students. I would hope that my actions during the school year would prove my intentions and would allow a respectful, family atmosphere to exist between home and school. Reflecting upon what I have learned, I think I would also try to implement more hands-on parents’ nights so parents are able to get a feel of what their students are learning, rather than attending solely PTO meetings.
