Three areas of impactful change were identified with one being further researched.
Implementation of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol
One primary focus would be the implementation of SIOP professional development throughout the school year. There would need to be at least four days of training on ways to implement SIOP, with follow up professional development activities throughout the school year. There would need to be accountability for all teachers in this implementation process, as often times teachers resist changes to their daily lives in the classroom.
Professional Development for Instructional Strategies
Teachers indicated on the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey that they were in need of additional training in relation to instructional strategies for LEP students, so implementing a once-monthly meeting would be an effective strategy for helping to close the achievement gap among the LEP students (NCDPI, 2013).
Increase parental involvement by increasing parent nights
In order to showcase the diversity of our school, students and families should be able to participate in a World Culture Night with products created by students through their cultural instruction. Parents would be able to walk through the classrooms and learn about a different country or culture that is represented by the student body population. This would help with our LEP students as they often begin to lose their cultural identity as they begin to assimilate to American culture.
Area #1-Implementation of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) was chosen to research and implement to have the most impact on all LEP students.
This change will require a structural frame change as teachers must implement a new program into our daily routines.
